Man Discharges Firearm into Apartment, Claims Accident

Morganton Public Safety Officers responded to 300 Michaels Street, Apt. H to investigate the report of what sounded like a gunshot.  Upon arrival, Officers made contact with Michael Barber who stated his gun went off by accident.  Officers located the bullet inside the adjacent apartment which was occupied at the time.  Officials from Morganton Housing Authority confirmed Barber was not on the lease.  Barber was transported to the Burke County Jail, charged with felony discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and damage to property.  Officers retrieved two additional firearms from the apartment.  No one was injured.  Barber was placed in jail under a $10,000.00 secured bond and has a first appearance in court on Monday 4/22/24.
