Pitch Fire at Local Plant

On October 27, 2023 at approximately 10:45pm, members of the Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to 307 Jamestown Road (SGL Carbon) in reference to a structure fire. Upon members’ arrival, it was discovered that a vat containing pitch (oil) had caught fire between the container and the insulation surrounding the vat. Fire crews spent approximately 2 ½ hours working to contain and extinguish the fire. Salem Fire and Rescue assisted with suppression efforts until a control time was called.
